As an East Coaster, I felt like I grew up in the backwoods of the US.
Naturally, I always looked up to the East Coast transplants like J2, Ali, Todd Richards.
The guys who came from the East but could make it out in the West were all heroes to me.
The few times I got to share with J2 were always like gold- heavy and precious.
Whatever he said was like gospel to me, I didn’t question, I just followed.
Although I was riding for Estone and managed by Cole, it was Tooz who I really listened to, and who gave me the most insightful advice.
Being from NH, I always loved puffy coats, except the fact that they’re often made from thin materials and rip easily, so I was always looking for beefy, tough puffy coats.
Trevor Andrew, Drew, Hasi all had the Analog puffy jacket, and I wanted one.
I saw Tooz and a concert during the 2002 Salt Lake Olympics, he was wearing an impeccably stylish Timberland leather puffy coat.
I said “Man, Tooz, that is an awesome jacket, you know where I can get one?”
“Dream On” was his reply, I had to laugh.
I think Tooz knew damn well where to get one but he didn’t want me bitin’ his style.
It’s taken me 20 years to get the opportunity to recreate that style.
Sometimes some things come along that are so unique, they just can’t be copied.
Tooz was definitely that type of a person.
You can try and try but you’ll never reproduce his rawness.
